Community Service Committee
Community Service is one of the Avenues of Service which encourages Rotarians to offer service to their communities.
Service is the very core of Rotary's character. It promotes Rotary's appeal and visibility in the community, and why Rotary continues to thrive. Rotarians recognize the importance of giving back to the community. As Rotarians we have the reasonability to find ways to improve the quality of life for those within our communities and to serve the public interest. A wonderful way to invite friends, family and community members to participate in Rotary. Some of the programs that the Rotary Club of Pleasanton has participated in are defined below:

Rotary Gives Thanks is a program that has historically been done on a Saturday morning in May. We work with the Senior Center to identify seniors in Pleasanton that need help with spring cleaning chores. These could be inside or outside their homes. It could include pruning bushes, raking leaves, cleaning gutters, washing windows, etc. It can be hard work, but the seniors are very appreciative of our efforts.

Open Heart Kitchen in conjunction with the Pleasanton Senior Center. Rotary also gets involved as servers at the Sage Cafe at the Senior Center during their lunches once a month.

Seniors Christmas Tea is another annual program. This is an event that we partner with the Senior Center on in early December. We escort the Seniors in, pour them tea, serve them cookies, while music is performed and Santa makes an appearance. The seniors really do enjoy the event and it is filled to capacity.

Sunflower Hill Gardens in Livermore. A special program that we were involved in the past year was working with Sunflower Hill. They are an organization focused on creating places where adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities can live, work, learn and thrive. Our club helped them with work they were doing in their gardens to make them wheelchair accessible. Over a several month period, we helped clear the walkways of weeds, lay down plastic barriers and spread decomposed granite. This was some significant manual labor involved, but it was fun doing this outside during the pandemic while masked up.

Kids Against Hunger in Pleasanton. We participated with the Pleasanton North Rotary Club in this event for the first time on August 6, 2021. Production lines work on adding rice, soy, protein powder and vegetables into plastic bags that are weighed, vacuum sealed and then packed in boxes for worldwide distribution to locations in need. We will be looking to do this again in conjunction with other Rotary Clubs in area 4.
